In 1939, during a long boat journey in India, scruffy alcoholic Dr Steiner tells the story of his downfall to a traveller. Disgraced from a German hospital, he spent years successfully manning a remote clinic in the Portuguese colonies, until a Portuguese lady approaches him for an abortion.
