Synopsis

Under the enduring state of emergency, Gulbîn is obsessively painting a portrait of her mom with inspiration from Whistler. Meanwhile, her mother is trying to insulate the house from the noise of the bombs and her father is trying to reimagine his war-stricken city with old photographs he took.

Our take

Capturing the impact of war on the human psyche, Before the Night offers a subtle portrayal of trauma through its characters’ eyes. By never directly showing the war itself, Ali Kemal Çınar forces viewers to confront the emotional aftermath of conflict, with all of its nightmarish silence.
