Beautiful, interesting, incredible cinema.
Edit lives a wealthy life until she becomes a widow and has to face her past. Her son István blames her intention to give up her luxurious life on hysteria. He has his mother watched by Kati, his fiancée. Although Edit is too weak to change, Kati is astonished by István’s limitless brutality.
Marta Mészáros’s lyrical, realist cinema favors women’s stories and complex, “difficult” protagonists. In her second feature, a widow looking to shed her past as a bourgeois wife and gain some independence ends up clashing with her son’s girlfriend as the generation gap closes between them.
