St. Petersburg 1881. On one of his aimless walks, the fanciful Fyodor, who is kept away from life by his daydreams, meets the girl Nastenka, who is waiting in vain for her lover Viktor. Fyodor, in reality awkward and inhibited, dreams up a brilliant heroic role.
