The king of Illyria marries the princess Fredericka of Dalmatie but the latter discovers that her husband has a mistress, Sephora. Revolted, she turns to Prince Alexei out of friendship. The agitation increases as a revolution demands the abdication of the king and the queen opposes this decision.
