Synopsis

Rue Mouffetard, in Paris’ market district, is seen through the eyes of a pregnant filmmaker. Women shop at a vegetable market, their faces marked by care and poverty, while young lovers playfully and innocently enjoy their time. Meanwhile, the city’s homeless drink and sleep on the sidewalks.

Our take

This short film is both a whimsical celebration of sensual love and an affectionate portrait of a Paris street. By juxtaposing shots of faces and shop windows with images of an embracing couple, Agnès Varda builds a tender contrast between a personal romance and the collective life of the quarter.
