Synopsis

Jovina and Marlene are Black women from different generations. They both left northeastern Brazil for Vidigal, a favela in Rio de Janeiro, to search for new opportunities. In domestic surrounds, they speak about changing living standards, the work of mothering, and independence for women.

Our take

When developing countries witnessed sudden shifts to social class through the 1980s, Eunice Gutman brought her unique feminist perspective. Soundtracked with spirited folk song, this double portrait puts two women who have moved to urban neighborhoods, hoping for better futures, front and center.
