Our take
Named after a scroll painting, Gu Xiaogang’s moving study of a family in Zhejiang Province entrances with slow-tumbling long takes and realist detail like fine linework. Debts and duties bear down on siblings with the weight of mountains, but the river—inky blue or palest mauve—soothes and sustains.
