Synopsis

In remote Finland, farmer Pasi struggles to provide for his wife and four children, supplementing his meager income with odd jobs—and moonshine cooked up deep in the woods. But run-ins with the authorities and ever-deepening poverty turn his good-natured heavy drinking into violent fits of despair.

Our take

Variously compared to the work of Émile Zola and Béla Tarr, Mikko Niskanen’s magnum opus is the defining masterpiece of Finnish cinema. An hallucinatory, punch-drunk colossus of anthropological cross-examination, Eight Deadly Shots is a shattering psychological epic pickled in vinegar and booze.
