Synopsis

Malalai Joya has been called the most famous woman in Afghanistan. Through her run for parliament, in a campaign that takes place behind a burka, the young politician dares to challenge warlords and opium kings in a dangerous fight to bring progress to Afghanistan.

Our take

This portrait of an inspiring female leader also offers a fascinating insight into a political campaign and the terrible women’s rights situation in Afghanistan. A Grand Jury prize-winner in Sundance that displays the courage, defiance, and danger surrounding a woman’s refusal to be silenced.
