Synopsis

Jakob Fabian, a young ad-man, spends his days working for a cigarette company and his nights wandering the streets of Berlin, where he falls in love with actress Cornelia. As her career begins to blossom, prospects for his future wane amid the twilight hedonism of pre-Nazi Germany.

Our take

A panoramic plunge into the dying days of the Weimar era, this epic romantic melodrama is the latest from German cinema’s best-kept secret, Dominik Graf. Vividly conjuring a doomed age of bohemian insouciance, Fabian examines the futility of resistance against the all-consuming vortex of history.
