Synopsis

In postwar Tokyo, secrets and deceptions strain the already fragile relationship of a childless, middle-aged couple as Taeko’s city-bred sophistication clashes with her husband Mokichi’s small-town simplicity. Meanwhile, the arrival of Taeko’s modern, headstrong niece shakes up their household.

Our take

Modernity and small-town tradition collide in this poignant domestic drama from Yasujirô Ozu. Shot on the streets of postwar Tokyo, and released a year before the career-defining Tokyo Story, The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice is an exquisitely modulated tale of a marriage coming apart at the seams.
