Synopsis

During the Occupation, Martin, an unemployed taxi driver, smuggled food packages to the black market. His usual sidekick having been arrested, he calls on a stranger, Grandgil, to cross Paris by night with suitcases full of pork. But Grandgil quickly turns out to be uncontrollable.

Our take

Satirizing the opportunism running rampant in occupied France, Claude Autant-Lara’s anarchic smash hit not only stars the charismatic Jean Gabin but also marks a break for beloved funnyman Louis de Funès. A cult classic that found an unlikely champion in Cahiers du cinéma’s François Truffaut.
