Danglard is a mentor and a lover of the stage stars of 1890s Paris. When he discovers a naive young laundress dancing in a nightclub, he is inspired by her talent to revive the long-forgotten cancan in a show that the whole of Paris, rich and poor, will never forget.
The colours! Jean Renoir’s irresistibly witty musical, a love letter to the irrational call of show business, is a late masterpiece from one of cinema’s greatest masters, who even past 60 could deliver such sprightly entertainment with a lifetime of wisdom flowing underneath. What a finale!
