Depicts the story of Yukina Yamahata, a 15-year-old schoolgirl from a small northern Japanese town as she strives to become a maiko (as geisha are known in their traditional home of Kyoto). Apprenticed for five years to a maiko house under the tutelage of the okasan, or maiko mother.
