In the 1920s, a beautiful young woman named Charlotte Bruckner (Mia Farrow) arrives in Pago Pago, a Pacific island under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Navy and lorded over by her uncompromisingly cruel father Captain Charles Bruckner (Jason Robards).
