Synopsis

Astrid, a forty-something mother of two, struggles to regain her balance in the wake of her husband’s death. As new questions confront Astrid from every angle, even simple activities like buying a bicycle or engaging with a work of art, are fraught with unexpected challenges.

Our take

Cinema, Europe, home—what was once familiar has become disordered, and a staggering Maren Eggert is the center that cannot hold. Imbued with the mournfulness of elegy, then lifted with the hope of birdsong at dawn, this heartrending film was Angela Schanelec’s first Silver Bear winner.
