Vienna 1847: numerous women die of puerperal fever. The Hungarian gynecologist Ignaz Semmelweis finally makes an epoch-making discovery; the treating doctors bring death to the pregnant woman through poor hygiene. With his knowledge Semmelweis makes enemies of the doctors who drive him into exile.
