Our take
A nocturnal poem on precarious love, Hollywood art, and the threat of violence, Nicholas Ray’s noir masterpiece seduces with its bruised romanticism. Starring alongside the exquisite Gloria Grahame, Humphrey Bogart deconstructs his ice-cool star persona in a staggeringly vulnerable performance.
