Synopsis

Every night after work, construction worker Ras stays up late graffitiing around Cali, Colombia. But when he steals paint to finish a huge mural, he gets fired. Penniless, Ras journeys across the city to find fellow graffiti artist Calvin, a fine art student struggling with his parents’ divorce.

Our take

Drawing praise on its premiere at Locarno, Los Hongos is an impressionistic coming-of-age graffiti film—shot, documentary-like, in gorgeous 35mm, and led by fantastic naturalistic performances. Colombian director Oscar Ruíz Navia’s follow-up to his acclaimed gem Crab Trap.
