Synopsis

Renko, a spirited sixth-grader in Kyoto, struggles to accept her parents’ separation. When her father leaves, her mother sets new rules Renko can’t make sense of. In a bid to hold on to their old life, she hides the divorce papers and plans a getaway to a lake they once visited as a family.

Our take

The rich inner worlds of children—filled with unanswered questions and fantastical reveries—come vividly alive in Shinji Sômai’s poetic masterpiece. Trailing after the hurried footsteps of a lovably mischievous troublemaker, Moving probes the delicate passage between innocence and understanding.
