Synopsis

In a place where conventional structures of authority fall away, a tomboy, a sea captain, a fiercely independent pregnant mother, and two wayward fishermen must find their place in the space between the urban and a traditional life threatened by impending forces.

Our take

This lyrical documentary from Emilia Mello takes to the Atlantic coast of Brazil for an observational portrait of the Caiçara people. Intimately capturing their symbiotic relationship with nature, No Kings is a poetic study in collective living under the encroaching demands of modern capitalism.
