Synopsis

Within 24 hours after the nuclear disaster on the coast near Fukushima, Japan, the authorities ordered the evacuation of the area within a 12-mile radius from the plant. Toshi Fujiwara travelled through this no man’s zone, meeting people who remain near the nuclear plant for different reasons.

Our take

One of the first films to chronicle the aftermath of Japan’s 2011 nuclear catastrophe, this is a searing portrait of the inhabitants who remained in the radioactive zone. Toshi Fujiwara balances poetic narration with ground-level footage, but all is secondary to the eloquent testimony of survivors.
