Synopsis

Juan, his wife, and his children live deep in the countryside of Mexico. As his relationship with his wife strains and he grapples with old memories and violent urges, a devil stalks the land and a horrific crime slowly brews…

Our take

Mexican director Carlos Reygadas can be divisive, and never more so than when he won Best Director at Cannes for this breathtakingly beautiful, deeply unsettling, and uniquely stylized portrait of a family balanced between heaven and hell. This is cinema without rules, and the opening is stunning!
