Young Danny Farrell lives in a boardinghouse that with several residents who "play the horses, among them “Colonel” Harris and “General” Jeff and pretty Laurie Andrews. General Jeff is a blind newsstand owner who sells racing tips by Stuffy, another boardinghouse resident, at his stand.
