Synopsis

Former musicians Jan and his wife, Eva, have left the city to avoid a civil war and now live on a rural island. While the situation seems idyllic, the couple’s isolation begins to wear on their relationship, and eventually the armed conflict that they’ve tried to flee arrives on the quiet island.

Our take

Bringing Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow back after the psychological horror of Hour of the Wolf, Ingmar Bergman delivers a haunting drama on the desperation a husband and wife face when confronted by the threat of war. A bleak, apocalyptic vision that is, as ever for Bergman, profoundly powerful.
