Synopsis

On the margins of Tokyo, a family is united by fierce loyalty and a penchant for petty theft. One day the father and son meet an abandoned little girl, and, despite their poverty, the family takes her in. But an incident will expose their secrets that upend their tenuous, below-the-radar existence.

Our take

Japanese maestro Hirokazu Koreeda took the Palme d’Or at Cannes for this heart-wrenching drama about a family living on the margins of society. Told with peerless humanity and compassion, Koreeda’s intimate and engrossing masterwork is a quietly devastating indictment of Japan’s class divide.
