World War II breaks out and misery befalls upon Stepanida and her husband Petrok who live on a remote farmstead in Belarus. They suffer degradation not only at the hands of Nazis who occupy their village, but also from the malicious blows of the local police. Based on a novel by Vasily Bykov.
