Based on Winifred Holtby’s novel, it chronicles Sarah Barton’s appointment as headmistress of her hometown’s school, after years of teaching in London. Sarah learns that local council is ‘the front-line defence thrown up by humanity against its common enemies of sickness, poverty and ignorance’.
