The painter Henri Norwart takes his family to the country, hoping that the fresh air will benefit his wife who is seriously ill. After his wife death Henri runs into a man, Charles Duval, brutally abusing his wife Marie in public. Henri decides to take care of Marie and hire her as housekeeper.
