Synopsis

At the end of the nineteen-thirties, a small band of men and their Christero coronel refuse to accept amnesty and instead continues their fight against religious persecution and their right to practice their faith.

Our take

This tale of guerrilla warfare in 1930s Mexico finds echoes of Terence Davies in its rich, rigorous formalism. Favoring painterly compositions and striking tableaux over action beats and sentimental rhetoric, the majestic 35mm photography pays tribute to the revolutionary art of Diego Rivera.
