The final collapse of the Polish resistance forces Marcin and his lover Wiska to separate. Before she departs, she gives him a horsehair ring with a tiny crowned eagle symbolizing a free and united Poland. Meanwhile, the Germans, having leveled Warsaw, retreat before the incoming Russians.
