Synopsis

Based on the commissioned composition The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross (1787) by Joseph Haydn, seven Canadian filmmakers provide their own very personal view of the themes in Haydn’s piece: forgiveness, redemption, abandonment and reunion.

Our take

Using a Haydn oratorio based on Jesus’s final words as a structuring device, this dialogue-free, multidisciplinary essay film defies categorisation. From a prologue that sees an elderly nun throw herself from a plane and swan-dive towards the earth below, one extraordinary image follows another.
