Synopsis

Vienna, 1986. Filmmaker Ruth Beckermann joined activists in the streets to stop Kurt Waldheim from being elected Austrian President. More than 30 years later, using her recordings and a wealth of archival material, Beckermann analyzes the Waldheim Affair and Austria’s struggle with its Nazi past.

Our take

Delaminating the respectable image of Kurt Waldheim, this perspicacious documentary zeroes in on the systematic evasion of a dark history. Exploring right-wing populism and bringing the Austrian diplomat’s misinformation to surface, Ruth Beckermann’s portrait is one of far-reaching relevance.
