Synopsis

Set in Ghobadi’s native Kurdistan, close to the Turkey-Iran border. Soran is a 13-year-old boy who orders other children around as he installs an antenna for villagers keen to hear the broadcast of Saddam Hussein’s fall…

Our take

This award-winning film from Bahman Ghobadi looks at the lives and struggles of children in Kurdistan, an area as wrought with trouble now as it was in 2004 and when the film is set, before the first Iraq war. Human and heartfelt, its people are too rarely seen but their stories need to be told.
