Synopsis

In WWII Belgrade, Marko and Blacky get rich by dealing arms to the Communist resistance. But when things get too hot, they move into a cellar packed with refugees who manufacture the weapons. With Blacky convinced he should remain hidden until the war ends, Marko conspires to leave him there.

Our take

Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1995, Emir Kusturica’s expansive masterpiece tends to the bleeding wounds of Eastern European history with a shot of satirical absurdism. Controversial yet vitally political, this profound parable on opportunism, betrayal, and the fragility of ideology endures.
