Munich, 1955. Film star Veronika Voss becomes a drug addict at the mercy of corrupt Dr. Marianne Katz. After meeting writer Robert Krohn, the woman begins to dream of a return to stardom. As the couple’s relationship escalates, Veronika realizes how debilitated she has become through her drug habit.
Fassbinder’s penultimate film concluded his trilogy on postwar Germany, probing the mental scars left after the nation’s quick rebuild. Winning the Golden Bear at Berlin just three months before Fassbinder’s death, this is a scathing satire concealed as melodrama, shot in high-contrast monochrome.
