Beautiful, interesting, incredible cinema.
In 1860, Italy’s historic national hero Giuseppe Garibaldi led a military campaign known as Expedition of the Thousand and conquered Sicily and Naples, the first step in unifying the nation.
In celebration of his country’s centenary, master neorealist Roberto Rossellini (Rome, Open City) made this documentary-like war epic, seen here in a stunning restoration. With a superb lead performance from Renzo Ricci, the film is permeated with the Italian auteur’s characteristic humanism.
