Paraiti is a Maori healer. But new laws prohibit unlicensed healers, making the practice of much Maori medicine illegal. She is approached by Maraea, the servant of a rich woman, Rebecca, who seeks her help in hiding a secret which could destroy Rebecca’s position in European settler society.
