Synopsis

After escaping the war in Syria, a family learns to negotiate their new lives in Germany. But when the siblings begin to explore their transgender identities within their newfound freedom, their parents push back hard as they cling to strict religious and cultural ideologies.

Our take

An observational documentary free of judgment, Zuhur’s Daughters is a spare and tender portrait of queerness, family and culture clash. Spending three years with their trans sister subjects, filmmakers Laurentia Genske and Robin Humboldt pinpoint honest truths about the rocky road to happiness.
