It could have been such a great movie with a topic this promising and such a set of actors! MUBI, "Juliette Binoche in one of her most powerful performances", really? Her acting was a mess, her passion fake and pretentious, even the clumsy way she held her camera brought me that annoying sense when you feel ashamed for another person. But oh, maybe it's just the result of the disturbing combo of French and Irish. :)
This film left me feeling all over the place - nearly every moment I felt there was promise and substance it was soon ruined by melodrama and predictability. With such a powerful cast and subject-matter it could have been 1,000 times better.
This film succeeds in highlighting the pains of a soldier. A soldier of war. A soldier of life. A soldier of gender. By casting Binoche and translating his story into a female perspective, it adds a more emotional level of depth. A question of love between Binoche and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is dissimulated and the arguments with her publisher become as harsh as the world she is photographing. Yet Binoche remains.
