Synopsis

Bosnia, 1992. Serbian engineer Luka has installed himself in a village with his wife Jadranka and their son. Luka is preparing to build the railroad that will transform the region into a tourist’s paradise. Blinded by his optimism, Luka remains deaf to the increasingly persistent rumblings of war.

Our take

Probably breaking all of the safety rules that ever existed, Emir Kusturica’s Life Is a Miracle is a zany and surrealist vignette of Yugoslavia on the brink of the Bosnian War. A cacophonous, swirling and drunken celebration, with tinges of tragedy and criticism surrounding the conflict.
