Our take

Alice Guy-Blaché could distill a wealth of human experience into a single reel of film—and this thirteen-minute short is no exception. As debts and riches swirl in the psyches of the characters, the eponymous damsel sees the best in those less fortunate, under the happy influence of a smitten heart.
