Synopsis

Life is looking bleak for theater director Caden Cotard—his wife has left him and a strange disease is taking over his body. But after winning a MacArthur Genius Grant, Caden relocates to a giant warehouse and buries himself in a theatrical epic about his own life, set in a life-size replica of NYC.

Our take

Charlie Kaufman, the writing hand behind some of Spike Jonze’s most praised brain-teasers—Being John Malkovich, Adaptation—made his directing debut with this dreamlike, profound portrait of a creative mind in artistic crisis. Featuring a towering performance from the late Philip Seymour Hoffman!
