What are people saying?

  • Howard Orr's rating of the film 47 Ronin

Tasteful retelling of a famous story. But do we always really require good taste, restraint, and painstaking exposition in films? Or to put it more simply, is that highest level that cinema can aim for? Kenji Mizoguchi's magnificent 1941 version, made for a markedly more insular market, purrs with a hostility, severity and deceptive narrative economy that we nowadays do not feel the need to explore.
