Synopsis

1945. As Stalin gains control over Poland, famous painter Wladislaw Strzeminski refuses to compromise on his art to match the state’s doctrines. Persecuted and expelled from his University chair, he starts fighting against the Party, becoming the symbol of an artistic resistance against tyranny.

Our take

The final film by Polish master Andrzej Wajda, this vivid biopic of the avant-garde painter Władysław Strzemiński deftly swerves the pitfalls of hagiography. Set against a backdrop of postwar Stalinization, Afterimage examines the precarity of artistic idealism in an age of fascist governance.
