All Night Long

Directed by Basil Dearden
United Kingdom, 1962

This film is Othello to a progressive-jazz beat. The film’s Iago is drummer Patrick McGoohan, who plants the seeds of jealousy in the ear of Othello, or rather, bandleader Paul Harris. McGoohan hopes that, by destroying Harris’ marriage, he’ll be able to step into the bandleader’s job himself.

All Night Long Directed by Basil Dearden

Critics reviews

It was smart for Dearden to choose a timeless classic to drive the film’s plot, as he needed something that could stand up to the musical performances that comprise about half of the film. In general, he does a good job of melding the two and pacing the film to accommodate the musical digressions—or perhaps I should say, the plot digressions.
