The fifth season of the AHS anthology follows the enigmatic Hotel Cortez in Los Angeles, that is host to the strange and bizarre, spearheaded by its owner, The Countess, who is a bloodsucking fashionista.
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what’s now showing
A step in the right direction after Freakshow and especially Coven. Love the setting and the mood. My main criticism's is the whole detective Se7en-esque thing going on with and the execution of the "twist" you could see happening 1-2 episodes in with who was doing the murders. Evan Peters absolutely steals the show here- Other end of the spectrum Chloë Sevigny was horrendously bad & the most wooden i seen from her.
Essentially "The Shining" meets "The Hunger". The production design is dazzling, but there isn't enough meat to these borrowed tales. The crossovers to the earlier seasons struck me as lazy rather than creative.
Dennis O'Hare and Sarah Paulson kicked it out of park! Fantastic performances. Lady Gaga was a surprise. A lot of great eery energy to make it unforgettable but kinda manages to be forgettable.
Lady Gaga really deserved that Golden Globe, she is magnificant in this season! But when does Evan Peters finally get acknowledged? He gets better and better every season!!
The best chapter in the series, thanks mostly to Sarah Paulson, Denis O'Hare, and a wonderful comic performance by Mare Winningham. (There are also some great slow-motion walks by Gaga.)
