Set in the alluring world of flashily dressed scammers and mobsters part of the Abscam sting operation of the late 70s. Grifters, Irving Rosenfeld and Sydney Prosser, helped an FBI catch members of Congress taking bribes.

Movies that celebrate greed and narrated by the protagonist seem to be all the rage these days in our greed-based culture. Let me know when there is a film celebrating altruism....I must admit, I only saw the first 20 minutes of this film and after having seen the Pig of Wall St.,, I wasn't in the mood for more, but my pals tell me that this one is different. Could be. I couldn't get past the beginning.
The script is banal and never as hip or fun as David O. Russell thinks. Almost every scene seems like something I've seen before, and the actor transformations feel distracting, ultimately adding up to a rather forgettable endeavor for the director.
I don't wanna be the guy who links to a site he writes for and comes across as illegitimate, but this piece by Otie Wheeler is on point everybody and it changed how I think about O Russell. Time to rewatch the last few films.
"Hey, let's shoot almost every shot with a steadycam, regardless of whether it makes any sense compositionally or rhythmically!"--David O. Russell at some point, probably. But there's something to be said for a movie that cares so much about its actors that it forgets to be a cohesive object.
An ultravivid forgery of the late 1970s, AH gorges on its own hyperreality, so it's more than a little ungainly with bloat, not unlike Christian Bale, but as an oblique argument about art and (the art of) politics, it has a lot to recommend it. Sometimes in life, it's true, fucked-up and poisonous choices are the only ones available, and sometimes the good and the beautiful are incompatible with the true.
Babes be babes and dudes be dudes but whose connin' who???! I found the performances pretty fun to watch, even if there they were a bit too self conscious but biggest problem with the movie is that it lacked investment within its style. It just felt like a huge youtube mash-up of David Russell's favorite movies without any creative inspiration. It would make for a better porn parody.
