Our take

Refurbishing the tropes of the prison movie for a primal meditation on capital punishment, this excellent Singaporean drama is a philosophical treatise on matters of life and death. Surgically directed by Boo Junfeng, Apprentice fashions a quietly subversive indictment of state-sanctioned execution.
